three great stories

The previous mission president of the Buenos Aires West Mission, President Benton, told Sonja that he hoped to have the opportunity to baptize her. It wasn’t possible. He has been gone for nearly a year now. However recently, Sonja asked Presidente to baptize her. She first encountered the missionaries three years ago. Her live-in boyfriend was an inactive member of the church. She was taught by Elder Thompson and Elder Davila and began working to obtain a divorce from her previous marriage. The whole family has been active in the church since then. It is very difficult and expensive to obtain a divorce in Argentina. Her long wait is over. Her papers finally came through and she was married and baptized on Friday.

DSC03251Elder Berglund contacted this family in the streets. They gave him their address, and a week later, he and his companion went to visit them. Shortly thereafter, Elder Berglund returned home and his companion went to serve elsewhere in the mission. Before he left, however, he told the missionaries new to the area that they should definitely teach this family.
They went by numerous times, only to be rejected. I asked why they kept going back when they wouldn’t let them in and they responded that the rejection was soft and the recommendation was strong. Eventually, they were able to give a Book of Mormon to the wife. She laid it on the table, and her husband picked it up and read and read and read and read. He kept on reading until he had finished reading the Book of Mormon. The next time the missionaries came back, he invited them in and had dozens of questions. They gave him more to read and study and taught him more about prayer. That was two months ago, and Saturday they were baptized. In the next couple of weeks, he will receive the Priesthood, and then he will baptize their other two children that are of age.

DSC03259These two friends have been hanging out together for a long time. When Juan went to EFY this year, he wrote a reference for his friend. DSC03263When the sister missionaries contacted him with the reference his friend had written, he started coming to church and taking the missionary lessons. DSC03267His dad was fine with it, saying that it was his life, but his mom did not want him to pursue it. However, he persisted. Eventually, she saw many positive changes in his life and began to support his desires. He was so happy that they all came to witness his special event Sunday evening.

sunrise/sunset

Many of the missionaries think that the sunrises and sunsets in Argentina are more beautiful than they have seen elsewhere. I know that the technical reason for the beauty is that the earth's atmosphere refracts the sunlight into different wavelengths of light and the angle of incidence is what causes the refraction to be especially beautiful at those times of the day. I am wondering if the position of Buenos Aires on the earth also helps. The fact is that we wake up to skies that look like this often and enjoy similar skies most evenings as well.
Good morning, Buenos Aires!

labor day preparations

DSC03178The only thing that I didn’t mention yesterday is that Labor Day in Argentina carries about the same importance as Christmas and Easter. It is one of three days when absolutely everything is closed. It was obvious because the grocery stores and mall were packed with people who had Monday off and knew that today there would be no shopping options. Brianna, two of the hermanas and I made a little shopping trip to Unicenter to pick up a few things. It is fun to go there with the hermanas since they don’t normally see huge shopping malls like this one in their areas.

labor day

On 1 May 1886, a group of U.S. workers mobilized to claim labor demands, including the request for an 8 hour workday. The protest, led initially by 80,000 workers, soon led to a nationwide strike that affected many factories and hundreds of thousands of workers. The strength shown by the workers established that date as "Labor Day" in many parts of the world that followed the incident, called the Haymarket Affair. Today, Labor Day is celebrated on May 1 in many countries, however, it is celebrated the first Monday in September in the United States.

In Argentina, Labor Day has been celebrated since the late nineteenth century. The first event was held in 1890 in Buenos Aires, with the participation of many labor movements, composed primarily of immigrants--Germans, Italians, Spanish and Portuguese. QUINQU~2
Benito Quinquela Martin is a famous Argentine painter, who is celebrated for his paintings of the immigrant Argentine workers at the port of La Boca. He, himself, was a foundling child raised by nuns, until he was adopted at the age of 7. He worked in La Boca at his family’s coal yard and began drawing lessons in night school at the age of 14. However, by the time he was 20, he was receiving honors for his artistic achievement and remained famous throughout his life. It seems appropriate to also share his work entitled “Day of the Worker.”QUINQUE
With Labor Day falling on a Tuesday, Monday was also given as a national holiday in Argentina this year.
