As we were driving to the airport last night, I was amazed at the devastation that we witnessed. I grabbed my camera and was able to get a couple of pictures. It reminded me very much of what we see in Florida after a hurricane. The difference being that Florida is much more prepared for this kind of disaster and the aftereffects. "The level of virulence of this storm is not normal," said Diego Santilli, the city's environment minister, "The winds were similar to those of a tornado."
We saw downed power lines. Huge trees were uprooted as if they were nothing more than a pesky garden weed, and we saw other trees whose giant limbs were snapped as if they were nothing more than matchsticks. Besides the power restorations necessary, the cleanup effort is going to have to be massive.
The missionaries are very focused on their work and they are used to losing power from time to time. For them, this storm seemed like a minor inconvenience. When we began pulling them out of their areas yesterday, it seemed to be the first time that they realized that this storm was much more than they imagined.
We had been delivering water to some areas and the missionaries with the help of the members and their investigators had been creative in obtaining their necessities, nevertheless, their resources were quickly becoming depleted.
After many prayers and consulting with the area presidency here and the missionary department in Salt Lake, we decided to move 54 of our missionaries. There were a few companionships that actually had their power back already, but the majority of the areas where they lived were without power causing some serious knock-on effects.
You can imagine that it took us most of Saturday to coordinate this scale of a move. Between the missionaries being moved and the missionaries receiving additional occupants in their pensions, it was quite a day.
We moved the entire zone of Gonzalez Catan and almost the entire zone of Merlo. Lujan, Marcos Paz, Moreno and Ramos Mejia were able to house their missionaries in other parts of their zones.
The missionaries were extremely sad to have to leave their areas and more importantly, their investigators. It is a beautiful thing to witness the love that they have for this work. We have no idea how long it could be until power is restored having heard estimates from hours to weeks.
Of course, the prayers of our fast today included not only the petition that the visas for our waiting missionaries will come soon, but also, that all of our missionaries will be able to safely return to their areas very soon.
An MTC missionary mom sent me an email sharing the other side of waiting. She wrote: “…the morale at the MTC remains positive…as they know that the Lord’s plan will be revealed and they are willing to follow those footsteps until they arrive in that beautiful destination of BAW. This is the scripture they have adopted until their visa has been obtained, James 1:4 But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.”
Personally, I cannot talk about our missing missionaries, nor write about them without a emotional response. We are thinking about them and praying for them constantly. It is a sweet comfort to know of the love and prayers that are sent to heaven with ours, including among our missionaries that have already returned home from their missions.
And so we go, limping forward at this moment in the mission, but we go forward with full faith that patience will have her perfect work. This work is perfect. We have the perfect plan of our Father and the perfect obedience of our Savior that truly leaves us wanting nothing. How blessed we are to be able to share this Good News.
Quiero compartir un poco mas información acerca de nuestra tormenta. Tenemos las consecuencias de ¨rafagas fuertas de viento.¨ que vinieron el miércoles después de un dia que no fue normal con mucho calor que cambio rápida y dramáticamente a temperaturas frescas. La lluvia, el granizo y el viento hicieron cosas terribles incluso paredes que cayeron y techos también. Podíamos ver escombros, auto aplastados, arboles y postes de luz caídos. Algunos postes cayeron solos por mismo y otros porque las arboles cerca los tiraron.
Ibamos al aeropuerto anoche, y tuve una sorpresa grande al ver la devastación. Saque un par de fotos. Me parece muy similar a las cosas en Florida después de un huracán. La diferencia es que Florida tiene muchas preparaciones para este tipo de desastre y sus consecuencias. Ël nivel de impacto de esta tormenta no es normal.¨dijo Diego Santilli, el ministro de medioambiente de la ciudad. ¨Los vientos eran como los vientos de un tornado.
Vimos cables eléctricos caídos. Arboles gigantes estaban arrancados de raíz como un yuyo en el jardín, y vimos otros arboles con ramas grandes cortadas, como si ellos fueran nada mas que fósforos. Mas de la restauración de electricidad que es necesario, la fuerza para limpiar va a ser enorme.
Los misioneros están muy enfocados en su obra y para ellos es normal que corten la electricidad algunas veces. Para ellos, esta tormenta parece como un inconveniente menor. Cuando empezamos a sacar a ellos de sus áreas ayer, parece que la primera vez que ellos entendieron que esta tormenta fue mucho mas de ellos pudieron imaginar.
Hemos estado entregando agua a algunas áreas y los misioneros con la ayuda de los miembros y sus investigadores han sido creativos para obtener sus necesidades, sin embargo sus recursos eran cada vez menos.
Después de muchas oraciones y consultas con la presidencia del área acá y el departamento de los misioneros en Lago Salado, decidimos mudar 54 de nuestros misioneros. Había algunos que ya tenían electricidad pero la mayoría de las áreas donde ellos viven estaban sin electricidad que causada graves consecuencias.
Puede imaginar que fue la mayoría del sábado para coordinar esta mudanza. Entre los misioneros mudandose y los misioneros recibiendo mas personas en sus pensiones, fue un día extraordinario.
Mudamos toda la zona de Gonzalez Catan y casi toda la zona de Merlo. Lujan, Marcos Paz, Moreno y Ramos Mejia pudieron cuidar sus misioneros en otros partes de sus zonas.
Los misioneros estaban muy tristes de salir de sus áreas y mas que nada de dejara sus investigadores. Fue una cosa linda ver el amor que ellos tienen para esta obra. No tenemos ninguna idea cuanto tiempo va a tardar la electricidad en regresar. Escuchamos versiones como horas hasta semanas.
Por supuesto...las oraciones de nuestro ayuno hoy incluso la petición que las visas para nuestros misioneros que están esperando van a venir y también que todos nuestros misioneros van a regresar seguros a sus pensiones muy temprano
Una madre de un misionero en el CCM me escribió acerca del otro lado de la espera. Ella escribe ¨..la actitud moral en el CCM es positiva...porque ellos sabe que el plan del Senor va a ser revelado y ellos estar listos para seguir en estas huellas hasta llegar a sus destino lindo de Buenos Aires Oeste. Esta es la escritura ellos han adoptado hasta que sus obtengan sus visas...Santiago 1:4 "Pero tenga la paciencia su obra perfecta, para que seáis perfectos y cabales, sin que os falte cosa alguna".
Personalmente, no puedo hablar acerca de los misioneros que nos faltan, ni tampoco escribir acerca de ellos sin una respuesta emocional. Es un consuelo dulce saber del amor y oraciones que son mandadas a las cielos con las nuestras, incluso entre nuestros misioneros que ya están en sus propias casas.
Entonces, seguimos adelante con dificultades en este momento en la misión per avanzamos con plena fe que la paciencia hará un trabajo perfecto.
Esta obra es perfecta. Tenemos el plan perfecto de nuestro Padre y la obediencia perfecta de nuestra Salvador que realmente no dejara que nos falta nada. Que bendecidos que somos en poder compartir estas Buenas Noticias.
