happy birthday presidente

I absolutely insisted on a P-day to celebrate Presidente’s birthday. Honestly, in the MTC they told us that we really needed to take a P-day every week. It is just so hard to fit it in!

A while ago, I asked a local crafter to see what she could do with our mission logo. Presidente designed the logo after we received our call and before we arrived in the mission. Logozizzle
In Buenos Aires, in 1926, Elder Melvin J. Ballard prophesied that the church would grow in South America like an acorn into a strong oak tree. One of the elders remarked that he liked the symbolism of the acorn with the words “Come Unto Christ” that lead to the oak leaf.
The statue of the Angel Moroni atop the Buenos Aires Temple is superimposed over the sun, in the style from the Argentine flag, using celestial blue, from the flag as well, as the background color.
Happy Birthday, Presidente!DSC09377

after church

DSC09367
On Sunday after church we went to Chivilcoy. It takes about 40 minutes to get there from Bragado. We were picking up one of the elders that was receiving a change of area. The others will be a threesome until tomorrow when the office elders bring his replacement along with various supplies to campo.
DSC09372
We went to Parque Leloir on the way home to photograph the hermanas teaching a lesson. The missionaries often teach investigators outside their homes. One reason is that there are very specific rules about when they can go inside, and another reason is that at this time of the year, the houses can be very hot, so it is more pleasant to have a lesson out front.
DSC09378
These four hermanas are from Peru, Guatemala, Brazil and the United States. They became BFFs and begged to stay together another week. However, we had to take the traveling hermanas home, and if you have been keeping track, we have way too much luggage and way too many people to fit in our car by now. The assistants met us in Parque Leloir to help us get everybody back where they belong for the night.
DSC09381
The traveling hermanas are a huge blessing to the mission. They spend from Monday night to Sunday night in a different area each week. For training purposes, the elders, especially the zone leaders often do divisions with other elders in their zone, but it is difficult to do divisions among the hermanas because they are quite spread out all over the mission. The traveling hermanas have come to the rescue. This was an idea of Presidente’s that we are trying for the first time, this transfer. It is working fabulously, probably because these are fabulous missionaries. They are home for 24 hours now, to prepare for the coming week.

bragado

Our next stop and the place where we spent the night is a beautiful city that looks like it was imported from Italy. The sandstone-looking buildings that surround the central plaza are stunning. We noticed that a new cultural center was done in the same manner. I don’t know if it was a renovation or an addition. There are giant trees that line many of the streets. I would say that they line all of the streets, but logically I know that isn’t possible, but it seemed like it.
DSC09360DSC09355
Above are the houses across the street from the church and the National College, which is a secondary school, or high school where the kids in town attend. They are all out for summer vacation now until the first part of March.

Presidente is talking with the elders that serve in Bragado. Apparently, I wasn’t being very inconspicuous with my picture taking.
DSC09349DSC09357
Some of the locals were out shopping, enjoying the summer discounts. The top of the Bragado cathedral houses quite a few birds that were busy just before sundown.
DSC09351DSC09350
The main plaza is huge and beautiful from every angle.

mercedes b

I was traveling with Presidente this weekend. We had many stops to make after we left the offices. The first one was in Mercedes B. We met the elders at the chapel and then followed them to their apartment.
We are preparing for EFY right now. In about 10 days we will be in charge of one of the workshops that we will give to four different groups. In preparation for that event, we have several missionaries preparing short talks and we are photographing them, showing various missionary activities.
Presidente gave the missionaries the unenviable assignment to make every word of their talk important because we have such a short time to make an impact. Later, in the car, I was translating the elder’s talk into English as Presidente was driving. It was a powerful and well-written message. I can certainly imagine that hearing those words from the elder himself will be wonderful. As it was, Presidente and I enjoyed the Spirit through his thoughts.

clip_image002Since it is summer in the Southern Hemisphere, there are bicyclists are all over Buenos Aires. Civic leaders have tried to make Buenos Aires a bicycle-friendly city. A record 1.8 million bicycles were sold in Argentina in 2011, and  it is estimated that 1.6 million bikes were sold in 2012. Following a regional trend, Argentines have been increasingly giving up cars for bicycles, with the number of cyclists in Buenos Aires rising from 30,000 to 150,000 over the past three years, according to local government sources. In fact, bike sales surpassed used car sales in 2011. MAPA_redciclovias_Mar-20122-1024x1007Through its "Better on a Bike" (Mejor en Bici) program, Buenos Aires has built almost 50 miles of bike lanes since 2009, and more than 30 miles are planned for next year. With high demand and low inventory,  bicycles have become very expensive here. A bicycle that retails for $150 in the United States now costs the equivalent of $700 in Argentina. As a mission, we were fortunate to learn of a resource with a local member of the church who happens to be a bicycle manufacturer. Fortunately, with orders from the Buenos Aires South Mission, as well, we get a better price. They are not beautiful bikes, but they serve their purpose. We had one at the office in for repairs, so I got a picture.DSC09328 You can see that it is a bike with nothing added. The missionaries like to ride bikes, especially out in campo where there is no public transportation, and the distances from one investigator’s home to the next can be quite far. We have 34 missionaries on bicycles, which is actually less than 20% of our missionaries. As a side note, an interesting challenge for the mission is that many missionaries come to us that have never ridden a bike.
Presidente dialed back to his bike teaching skills from 30 or so years ago to get this elder on his way.

DSC09348DSC09349DSC09353DSC09344DSC09345DSC09346
We went to the Caseros Stake Center for the first time today. It is a pretty building. I was wondering how new it is because the chapel has handicap ramps, so I figured it couldn’t be too old. However, my husband told me that the building is actually quite old, but that it has been completely remodeled two times…except for one area.
They have these great vintage chairs on the stand, upholstered in a velvety maroon fabric…
DSC09351
They don’t change the chairs because a prophet sat in one of them. Beautiful!

Presidente went to a town way out in the middle of the province of Buenos Aires this past weekend. The town is named after the date of the May Revolution which started the Argentine war of independence.
Presidente didn’t bring me back a picture of the pretty cathedral in the Plaza Mitre downtown, but I have this one thanks to a google search.
And he didn’t bring me back a picture of the pretty lagoon, Parque de la Laguna Mulitas, but I have this one thanks to another google search.
25 de Mayo 033
And he didn’t even bring me back this picture of the missionaries serving there!
DSC02982
However, these elders know that Presidente has many things on his mind when he goes to the districts, and one them thought to have this picture taken, and he forwarded it to me :D

new money

About 6 months ago a new 100 peso banknote was introduced to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the death of Eva Peron. It was inspired by the 1952 Argentina 5 Pesos bill which was withdrawn three years later when a new military dictatorship took over. It was not announced when the bills would actually go into circulation. Although I saw one a few weeks ago, however, I didn’t actually own one until yesterday, when the mission finance secretary traded the new issue for one of my old 100 peso notes. Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner 100 peso Evita banknote
2012ArgentinaEvitaB2012ArgentinaEvitaA
The current President, Mrs. Kirchner, whose party was inspired by Evita's husband, Juan Peron, said the initial printing will be commemorative. Evita, who found fame as an actress before marrying Peron, is adored by many Argentines for helping women get the vote, securing labour benefits for the working classes and founding hospitals and orphanages. As a casual observer, it appears that inflation is growing dramatically. While the President claims that it is only 8%, many outside sources say that it is actually about 26%. All I can say is that when we first arrived in Argentina, we were getting about 4 pesos to the dollar and now we are getting about 5. It is too bad that the prices have gone up dramatically, as well. So, that means that the new bank note is worth about $20…for today.

we are reading

el-libro-de-mormon-otro-testamento-de-jesucristo_MLA-F-145464066_244I was sitting in church today, and I was thinking about how nice it is that the whole mission is reading the Book of Mormon, and basically we are all reading the same thing at the same time. And then I felt horrible, because I thought that perhaps the families of our missionaries would like to read along with us, and it never occurred to me, before today, to invite you. Book_of_Mormon_English_Missionary_Edition_Soft_CoverSooooo, even though it is late, it is not super late, and we would love to have everyone join us. You can just start right where we are if you want! The missionaries read on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. We read about 11 pages each day. This week we are reading: Monday/Lunes: 2 Ne 23-27 Wednesday/Miercoles: 2 Ne 27-31 Thursday/Jueves: 2 Ne 31-Jacob 3 Friday/Viernes: Jacob 3-6 Saturday/Sabado: Jacob 6-Palabras de Mormon The mission is not doing the coloring program, but I think it is a fun way to track your reading as a family, so I am including it for two languages. (Actually, there are a ton of cute ideas for tracking progress on the internet.) Anyway, we welcome you to join us, and perhaps it will make another little connection with the life of your missionary! The truth is that I usually read on Sunday and Tuesday because as my week goes, I seem to have less and less time. I start out a little bit ahead and end the week right at the same point with everyone else. I am finding it to be such a blessing that the church has the Book of Mormon audio available on iTunes as a free download. I haven’t listened to the English, but I think the Spanish reader is really good! *I will put a little note on the side bar with the assignments in the coming weeks.*

DSC09330I was talking with several of the missionaries today about how it is easier to teach investigators that you don’t know, than it is to teach your friends and fellow missionaries.
I totally get how they feel. I struggle with the same challenge.

DSC09331DSC09332

Entiendo bien. Tengo desafíos con la misma cosa.

While the Spirit converts, as missionaries we do all we can to be good facilitators for conversion. At this time, we are continuing our focus on our teaching skills. Today we began a second round of the mission listening to the missionaries teach a lesson from start to finish.
As an educator, it is fascinating to see how personality affects a lesson, and while I have watched the same lesson many times, I have never seen the same lesson. As a missionary, it is fascinating to see how the spirit works through individual talents to share the same message in a unique way.
I love my job!
DSC08910DSC08901DSC08902DSC08904DSC08906DSC08903
