stowaways

DSC09963Well, I have to confess that we had a stowaway at the Mission President’s seminar with us. Our dear little “Flat Izzy”, from North Carolina, came to Argentina to visit us. We were so delighted to learn that “Flat Haven”  from Mesa, Arizona, was visiting her grandparents as well and had also found her way into their luggage!

When Flat Izzy returned to North Carolina, the real Izzy was absolutely delighted to learn that she had a new friend and that they visited the Missionary Training Center and that they were at the temple in Buenos Aires holding hands together. DSC09961
The original Flat Stanley book about Stanley Lambchop was written in 1964 by Tommy Ungerer. Now there are series of books written by him and two other authors, as well. The Flat Stanley projects are a great way to learn about other places in the world and what better place for Flat Izzy and Flat Haven to visit than the MTC and the Temple in Buenos Aires!

the frigorifico

There are very few supermarkets the size of ones in North America found anywhere in Argentina. Most grocery stores are the size of North American convenience stores. You go to a butcher for red meat, and separate markets for poultry and fish/seafood. Produce markets abound and bakeries with exquisite pastries are on every block. Delis for terrific cooked meats, cheeses, prepared salads and sandwiches of all types, and, breads always seem to be "just around the corner."
For that reason I have been wanting to do a series of blogs on the components of a normal shopping district. I am beginning with the frigorifico.
DSC00134It can be loosely translated as the “refrigerator” and you go there when you want to buy meat. I am not talking about sliced meat or pre-prepared items. For that you go to the carneceria. I am talking about the whole cow.

In Argentina, beef has been a staple food for nearly a century.
Since the beginning of the twentieth century, when the average person in Argentina consumed 250 pounds per year, beef has been the primary meat product in the Argentine diet. It is estimated today that Argentina is one of the largest consumers of beef in the world, second only to the United States.

However, Argentina only has a population of 33 million people, while the United States has 230 Million people. Thus, the amount of beef per person for Argentina is much larger than that of the United States. Nowadays, the average Argentine consumer uses 190 pounds per year, which is approximately two-and-a-half times more than the average person in North America.
DSC09978You might be interested to know that Argentine beef is grass-fed and tastes different than the grain-fed beef of the United States. In addition, Argentines have a more eclectic taste than Americans—to say the least. Argentines believe in using all the animal from the "nose to the tail."   It has happened several times before, but just last week, once again, we saw the delivery man walking into the frigorifico with a whole skinned animal draped over his shoulders. The frigorifico is a very popular spot heading into the weekend since the Argentine barbeque, or parilla, is popular year round in a country where the people generally spend their time off work hanging out with extended family and friends.

missionary leadership council

DSC00167DSC00168DSC00171DSC00170DSC00172
The leaders always give a report about how their zone did with their goals from the past month and what they will focus on during the next month.

I gave a report on the Mission President’s seminar. One of the scriptures we focused on was Moses 7:62. Because of the phrase “…and righteousness and truth will I cause to sweep the earth as with a flood,…” I had the idea to share the video about Hurricane Sandy. We focused on applying the things that were said and done in the video in a physical way to the spiritual work in their areas. I’ll tell you that there was not a dry eye in the room after the video. The missionaries shared beautiful  comments that inspired us all.
If you haven’t seen this video that was produced by someone who is not a member of the church, by the way, it is certainly worth watching.

DSC09945After lunch we spent all of our time discussing the key indicators that we use every week. We plan to make a few changes, basically to focus more on working with the members here.
