On 1 May 1886, a group of U.S. workers mobilized to claim labor demands, including the request for an 8 hour workday. The protest, led initially by 80,000 workers, soon led to a nationwide strike that affected many factories and hundreds of thousands of workers. The strength shown by the workers established that date as "Labor Day" in many parts of the world that followed the incident, called the Haymarket Affair. Today, Labor Day is celebrated on May 1 in many countries, however, it is celebrated the first Monday in September in the United States.

In Argentina, Labor Day has been celebrated since the late nineteenth century. The first event was held in 1890 in Buenos Aires, with the participation of many labor movements, composed primarily of immigrants--Germans, Italians, Spanish and Portuguese.

Benito Quinquela Martin is a famous Argentine painter, who is celebrated for his paintings of the immigrant Argentine workers at the port of La Boca. He, himself, was a foundling child raised by nuns, until he was adopted at the age of 7. He worked in La Boca at his family’s coal yard and began drawing lessons in night school at the age of 14. However, by the time he was 20, he was receiving honors for his artistic achievement and remained famous throughout his life. It seems appropriate to also share his work entitled “Day of the Worker.”

With Labor Day falling on a Tuesday, Monday was also given as a national holiday in Argentina this year. 

El 1 de Mayo 1886 un grupo de trabajadores en los estados unidos empezaron una huelgo. Ellos querían un día de 8 horas para trabajar. Empezo con 80,000 trabajadores pero muy pronto después se unieron muchos negocios y trabajadores en todo la nación. Este evento empezó un dia que se llama, ¨Día de los Trabajadores en muchas partes del mundo depues de este dia conocido como ¨The Haymarket Affair.¨hoy el Dia de los Trabajadores es celebrado el 1 de Mayo en muchos países, sin embargo el dia es el primer luner de Septiembre en los estados unidos.

En Argentina el Dia del Trabajo ha sido celebrado desde el fin de siglo 19. El primer evento fue en 1890 en Buenos Aires con la participación de muchos...principalmente inmigrantes de Alemania, Italia, Espana y Portugal.

Benito Quinquela Martin es un artista famoso que tiene su reputación por sus pinturas delinmigrante Argentino en el puerto de La Boca. El era un nino educado por monjas hasta los 7 anos. El trabajo en La Boca en los campos de carbon de su familia y empezó pintando en su escuela nactura cuando tuvo 14 anos. Sin embargo para cuando tenia 20 anos estaba recibiendo honores por sus obras artísticas y continuo así todo su vida. Parece bueno compartir su obra llamada El Dia del Trabajador.¨

Como el ferriado fue un martes este ano el lunes tambien fue ferriado en Argentina.
