mission president’s seminar

We’ve been nearby this week, however, we haven’t been with our missionaries. We have been attending the mission president’s seminar. Recently, our area was joined with the area of Chile. I am not sure if that is the reason why, or if it was a tender mercy, nevertheless, we had two apostles at our seminar—Elder Oaks and Elder Bednar, along with their wives.
You may remember that recently, I used part of Elder Holland’s CES talk for our monthly video: http://www.lds.org/broadcasts/september-2012-ces-devotional?lang=eng
I have been meditating quite a bit about some of the ideas in that talk. I won’t quote him directly, but I have been thinking about how he expressed a takeaway idea about being found in the right place doing the right thing…in my own words, “find me now.”
Yesterday, when we went to have lunch, by way of a very fortunate set of circumstances, my husband and I ended up sitting between Elder Oaks and Sister Bednar and across from Elder Bednar. Of course, you won’t be surprised to learn that I found myself thinking, <wink>
Find Me Now!

In addition to some very spiritual teachings specifically regarding the Doctrine of Christ and the Atonement, we learned about some of the newsy type things going on the in the church. Elder Oaks gave us a little update on the political situation in China, and actually, from various participants, we received updates on the church growth in various new locales around the world. Later in the conference, Elder Oaks told us that he had an appointment to meet with the Minister of Religion for Argentina. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if the visas could come through easier?
We also learned about the 4,000 missionary applications that have been sent in the past few days and the fact that all of our missions are going to grow. That’s pretty exciting news! My daughter sent me this link with some information about that:

Tuesday afternoon, we spent a few minutes outside for a group picture, and I took a few casual ones along the way.

DSC01092Among the mission presidents and wives, is a couple that we met at the MTC, who were called to preside over the Argentina Resistencia Mission. A month ago this wonderful woman, who has become my dear friend, had a stroke. Fortunately, we have been able to visit her a few times since she was in a hospital nearby (in fact, it was the same hospital where we took Brianna. She continues near Buenos Aires with therapy. We missed her so much at the conference.

Among all the wonderful things we learned, we were also witnesses that our leaders not only talk the talk, they walk it. Although it had not been planned previously, Elder Oaks continued presiding over the seminar while Elder Bednar went with his wife to visit Sister Heyman providing a personal and powerful example of exactly what it means to minister.
This morning my husband told me about one of our Brazilian missionaries that contacted a man on the street that turned out to be a Brazilian. The family came to church on Sunday and the elder and his companion are now teaching them the gospel. I think it is likely that the Lord was prompting, “find them now” and surely the missionaries, as they complied with their purpose could have been thinking, “find me now.”
Their story is repeated over and over again with a gazillion variations all over the mission. What a blessing to know that the Lord is in charge, helping us to find those whom we can minister among. It is so easy to see what great missionaries we have, when we witness their choice to serve the Lord and teach the gospel when there are so many other options for them. What an inspiration they are!!!
Seriously, “find me now,”  find me with an amazing group of missionaries serving in the Buenos Aires West Mission.
Tomorrow the zone leaders will go into the offices so that we can begin sharing the things we have learned, and next week we will continue teaching those things to our our missionaries as we make a Mission Tour with Elder Zeballos of the Area Presidency.
