One of the signs of spring is evidenced in the silk floss tree. It is native to Argentina. The seed pod looks kind of like an avocado, but then it bursts open and cotton is inside. The cotton can be used for things like stuffing a pillow or for packaging. It is not super good quality cotton.
Another interesting feature about this tree is the thorns that protect it.
The real name of the tree is Ceiba speciosa. Locally it is called palo borracho, “the drunken stick”. The tree actually stores water. There are quite number of them adorning the temple grounds. However, they aren’t quite as spring-y yet, as the ones in my neighborhood. We have cotton floating around everywhere.
Eventually they will have beautiful flowers that last four months or more beginning about mid-summer. I need to remember to get my own picture later on!
En Argentina el primer día de la primavera siempre es celebrado el 21 de Setiembre, lo cual en realidad es uno o dos dias antes de equinoccio. Estamos disfrutando algunos dias soleados antes de empezar una semana mas de lluvia.
Uno de los signos de la primavera podemos ver en el árbol que la gente llama palo borracho. Es nativo de Argentina. La semilla parece como la palta pero cuando se abre hay algodón a dentro. El algodón no es tan bueno pero puede usarlo para cosas como un almohada o guardar cosas en un paquete.
Hay otra cosa interesante, las espinas que lo protegen.
El nombre real de este árbol es ceiba speciosa. Ellos acá dicen palo borracho porque tiene la capacidad de guardar agua y cuando esta haciendolo es gordito. Hay muchos en los jardines del templo. Ellos no están tan listos para la primavera todavía como los de mi barrio. Tenemos algodón por todos lados. Finalmente ellos van tener flores lindas que van a quedar 4 meses o mas empezando el medio de verano. Necesito recodar sacar mi propia foto mas tarde esta ano!
