some shoe history

In the late 1800’s, when two million other people were immigrating to Argentina from Spain, or actually from the western Pyrenees mountains that straddle both France and Spain, Juan Echegaray decided to join the exodus. He was a shoe maker. Once in Argentina, he partnered up with a Scottish immigrant that had been a textile manufacturer and created an espadrille that they named alpargatas.
Although the company was started in 1885, the story of alpargatas began thousands of years ago, as it is believed that alpargatas are a descendant of the Egyptian sandal. Nevertheless, it was probably the gauchos in their travels throughout Argentina that spread the popularity of these inexpensive and versatile shoes. Alpargatas were traditionally made only in black or white and have been a staple of Argentine footwear for over 100 years. In 2002, Blake Mykoskie and his sister came to Argentina as contestants during the second season the The Amazing Race, a popular television program in the United States. Four years later he returned to Argentina for a vacation, and it was then that he came up with the idea to market alpargatas in the U.S. Toms was born.

Alpargatas have continued to increase in popularity since then. I took a little field trip to Capital and visited one of the local tabalaterias or saddlers, that had been recommended to me. Along with all the gorgeous leather and horse gear, I found alparagatas.

They sell for about $15 there, but the missionaries tell me that they normally purchase them at local fairs and shoe repair shops where they are even less expensive.
Now, alpargatas are appearing in a plethora venues.  I recently saw a beautifully hand-embroidered pair that was selling for $100. However, my favorite ones are the alpargatas that one of my sister missionaries customized for me—traditional white, hand-painted.

Venden como $15US allá pero los misioneros me dijeron que ellos pueden comprarlas en ferias o zapaterías donde ellas están mas baratas.

Ahora, las alpargatas están en muchos lugares. Recién, yo vi algunas bordadas a mano que salen $100US. Sin embargo mis favoritas son ellas que alguna de mis hermanas hizo para mi--blancas tradicionales y pintadas a mano.
